Hickory, dickory, dock: Golfers turn back the clock

"With all the attention the Michigan Open received last week, not to mention the exciting finish of the Senior Open and the Par-3 Shootout at Treetops, golfers may be forgiven if they overlooked the Hickory
Open, played last weekend at the Kingsley Club.

It was a 36-hole, medal-play event engaged with such clubs as mashies, niblicks, spoons and brassies.

Fred Muller, a Grand Rapids native and head pro at Crystal Downs, had the idea for an annual competition that would decide the nation's best hickory-club player.

Though 72 spots were available, word of the event was slow to spread and only 30 applied, traveling from as far as California, Virginia, Texas and Florida. Still, of the 30, one could count some very notable golfers, including Dr. Tom Jamieson of Lansing, a Michigan Senior Amateur champion; the aforementioned Muller; noted golf teacher and lecturer Gary Wiren of North Palm Beach, Florida Randy Jensen, the Nebraska amateur champion.
